Ethical Statement

messages

As a small family business that’s grown and moved on by a generation (although founder Clinton is still actively involved), we’re thoroughly committed to the company, staff and industry. We appreciate many of our customers may be looking for this information to assure they are making the correct buying decisions and we strive to answer any questions you may have regarding this.

As a company, we employ approximately 15 staff – the majority of which are long-standing members in full and part-time positions. We also employ students from A level age through university. We pay living wage and above and enjoy very low staff turnover. We have a vested interest in our team, which has become part of the Burhouse Limited family over the years.

With regards to our products, we source internationally and direct from manufacturers, with whom we have developed close working relationships over many years of business. Our suppliers conform to the requirements and laws of their own governments. We have visited many of our suppliers at their factories, have long-held relationships and friendships with many of them and can vouch for the above, from our own enquiries.

All our metal findings production is compliant with EU REACH regulations where required and certified by a program of scheduled batch testing products with the assay office. This ensures compliance with the following:

-       EU Regulation No 1907/2006 concerning Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulates the use of nickel, lead and cadmium in jewellery products.

-       Entry 27 of Annex XVII of REACH concerns the EU Nickel Directive and requires compliance with British Standard BS EN 1811:2011+A1:2015.

We recycle our old silver for new production with one of our chain manufacturers.

We support a small silversmith business in Jaipur that sells fair trade product.

Our gemstone products come from established lapidaries, who comply with their own country’s required safety and employment laws. Although we are satisfied with the lapidaries we use, we cannot verify the source of stone used as our suppliers source rough from a wide variety of supply.

We supply commercial grade gemstones. Where a grading has been used this is our own specification to notify a higher level of material/cutting. There is no recognised global certification of commercial gemstone and therefore we do not provide certificates for any of our gemstone products.

As a company we support a number of charities. Our main fundraising is for Bloodwise - The Blood Cancer Research Charity, as our managing director Louise had a bone marrow transplant (allograft) in 2013 to cure Hodgkin lymphoma. We also support Jigsaw, which is a small street kids’ charity in the Philippines, with a monthly donation. Our staff tuck shop proceeds also go to charity – we choose a different one each year.

If you require any specific information regarding certain products, please contact tracey@burhouse.com and we will do our best to answer any questions.
